Meretz-Yachad Chairman Yossi Beilin said today [November 23, 2006] that it was a mistake to detain Marwan Barghouthi, to try him in a civil court, and to refuse to release him.  According to Beilin, although Barghouthi holds greater responsibility than any other Palestinian for the outbreak of the second intifada, he is an important Palestinian leader who supports the diplomatic process and enjoys broad support in the Palestinian street.  Beilin made these remarks at a press conference for foreign correspondents in Jerusalem.
